Pleasant woman. Nia pulled into her driveway, turned off the ignition, and sat for a moment. She pulled out her phone and thumbed through to her last message to Jake.

>Nia: Hey. I’m back in Houston.

~5 minutes later.

>Jake: Great. How did it go?

>Nia: Great.

>Jake: Nice! Want to meet up to discuss?

>Nia: Sure. Let me get inside and put my stuff down, then I’ll be over in a little.

>Jake: Perfect. Use your key. I’m not home ‘til 7, but I’ll see you then.

She sprung out of the car and let herself in the front door.

“Hey Grandma.”

Her grandma looked up at her through thick lenses. “How was Austin?”

“Great. Was fun. Got to ride in a private jet. The food was just so-so, though.” She held her hand out and turned it back and forth. “They don’t know how to cook like you do.”

Grandma Pat beamed at her.

Nia looked at the brown kitchen table. “Hey Grandma?”

“Yep?”

“Did you see a house key sitting here on the table?”

“Nope. There was nothing here when I got in here. I’ve been out too. Just got here.”

Nia furrowed her eyebrows and wandered into the living room. She rotated, eyeing the sofa and side table. Where’s that key?

She ran into her room and looked on her bed and nightstand. She spun around in the room. Her heartbeat quickened. She jolted over to the closet and rummaged through her clothing.

She ran over to the door where her purse laid. She picked it up and dumped the entire contents on to the floor. She crouched down, poking through coiled receipts, loose change, a wrapped tampon, pens, and grimy gum paper. No key.

Her body suddenly grew limp as she slid down the wall. She drew in several breaths, staring blankly in to the air. Where the fuck could that key be?

When the clock neared 6:30, she hopped in the Audi and drove to Tanglewood. She waited in the car until Jake pulled up. He blasted heavy guitar music until he turned the car off.

She ambled out of the car.

He walked over to her and embraced her, planting a kiss on her mouth.

She drew in a deep breath, surveying his eyes. Tell him. Tell him how you can’t even hold on to a key, you fucking baby.

She raised one finger in the air, then gripped her chin. She tilted her head sideways and stared at the stone ground. No words appeared.

Jake’s smile faded. “What is it?”

“I have something to tell you,” she said.

Jake crinkled his eyebrows, “What is it? Tell me.”

Nia took a deep breath as her palms began to sweat. “I can’t find the key. I lost it, and I’ve looked everywhere,” her eyes began to tear up. “I’m sorry.”

He placed one arm around her back, drawing her in closer. “It’s okay. No big deal. I can give you another.”

She pulled away from his chest. “That’s not all, Jake.” She looked into his hazel eyes. “I have something else to confess.”

“Okaaay. Tell me then.”

“It’s kind of a long story.”

“Well, let’s get out of this heat and go inside.
